Internationally renowned Filipino-American tenor Sal Malaki and seasoned pianist Charito Pizarro performed charity concerts in Berne and in Aarburg, Switzerland on 5 & 6 July, respectively.

The concert’s theme, “Dr. Jose Rizal: Philippine Hero in Quest of Swiss hero, William Tell”, paid tribute to Swiss legendary hero Wilhelm Tell, who became a political and ideological inspiration for Dr. Rizal.

The carefully selected concert pieces wove through music, a poignant tapestry of the Filipinos’ struggle for freedom through various periods in history. Rizal’s role in the development of Philippine national consciousness and in the gradual articulation of the inchoate desires of the Filipinos was clearly reflected in each of the selected songs.

The concerts, which were a part of the series of activities organized by the Philippine Embassy in Berne to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Philippines-Switzerland relations, were attended by members of the Filipino-Swiss community in Switzerland. Proceeds from the concert will go to the music education of the streetchildren at the House of the Good Samaritan in Cebu City.  END
