Outpouring of Support for Filipino victims of Typhoon Haiyan

In the aftermath of the disaster brought about by Typhoon Haiyan (local name: Yolanda) in Central Philippines, messages of sympathy and offers of assistance have been extended to the victims through the Philippine Embassy in Berne.  Filipinos in in Switzerland and Liechtenstein and various Swiss individuals and organizations have extended and are offering to extend assistance to the victims of the typhoon which thus far has been the most disastrous in Philippine history.

Various Filipino organizations across Switzerland are now mobilizing their members and friends and organizing fund-raising events for the typhoon victims as well as those affected by the earthquake that hit the provinces of Cebu and Bohol, also in Central Philippines, the month before.

Members of the Filipino religious groups are also celebrating masses in various cantons of Switzerland for the typhoon victims. Collections from these masses or part of them will go to the Philippines to assist the provinces destroyed by the typhoon.

The Swiss government sent to the Philippines last Saturday a five-member team composed of sanitation experts from the Swiss Humanitarian Unit. The group will work with international aid organizations on the ground to help deliver emergency assistance to the victims.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) will also be launching a Flash Appeal on 12 November at 9:00 a.m. in Geneva. The appeal will be based on the initial assessment made by the UN officials on the ground.

The Philippines’ Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported that,  as of 11 November,   the number of persons affected by the typhoon has reached 9.6 million. Some 96, 039 displaced families with 449,416 people are staying in 1,790 evacuation centres, while 36,627 other families with 182,379 people temporarily seek shelter in the homes of friends and relatives.
